Kusatsu Onsen – The Hot Spring Spirits ♨️

At the beginning of this year, while traveling to Japan for an exhibition, my friends and I decided to visit Kusatsu Onsen, a place I had always dreamed of going to (⁎⁍̴̛ᴗ⁍̴̛⁎)

Ever since watching the Crayon Shin-chan hot spring movie, I had been fascinated by Japanese hot springs (although I used to be too shy to actually try them 😂).

The bus ride from Tokyo to Kusatsu felt so long, but the moment I arrived in the hot spring town, I was overwhelmed with emotion. The scenery I had only imagined in my mind was suddenly right in front of me. Hot spring steam rose from every corner of the town, and it happened to be snowing that day. The combination of the snowy landscape and the steaming hot springs was absolutely magical 🥹✨

We also watched a traditional Yumomi (hot spring water-stirring) performance and learned a little about the history and culture of Kusatsu's hot springs 💛

While soaking in the onsen, not only did it wash away my physical fatigue, but it also seemed to melt away my worries.

As I relaxed in the warm water, a thought crossed my mind...

What if every hot spring had its own spirit watching over it?

On the journey home, I began sketching a story about Cosmic Shrimp and Kani-Kani.

And so, the Hot Spring Spirits who protect Shrimp Bath and Kani-Kani Bath were born.

When will these little guardians finally appear before us? 😆♨️💛🍤🦀✨
